Recognizing and addressing mental health challenges was crucial during the onset of the pandemic and will be extremely important moving back to “normal.’ The National Alliance on Mental Health reported a study conducted in June of 2020 revealed that “40.9 % of respondents reported at less one adverse mental or behavioral health condition, including symptoms of anxiety disorder or depressive disorder (30.9%), symptoms of trauma and stressor-related disorder (TSRD) related to pandemic (26.3%), and having started or increased substance use to cope with stress or emotional related to Covid-19 (13.3%).” As we move forward, recognizing the pandemic was a traumatic event and educating communities and schools on mindfulness and behavioral modification programs will help reduce stress and provide the support needed as we return to our new normal.

Most schools are not equipped with the resources to assist with mental and emotional programs for students or educators due underserved communities. Historically, research has found inter-generational trauma and stress lead to challenges for schools, maladaptive behaviors, low graduation rates, and chronic stress for staff and students.
